SCROLL
BLUE STORM
For project Blue Storm, I was selected to update the internal dishwasher racks to be used in all North American dishwashers moving forward. However, I wanted to take a more holistic approach and redesign the entire dishwasher from the ground up. I wanted to take in all natures of possibilities including areas that were not a part of this project. This required creating three different tiers of features (i.e. a good, better, and best model). The new rack system, within this design, will launch in 2024.

Research
To inform the redesign of the dishwasher, I conducted user research. Instead of using traditional focus group research methods, I pioneered surveying users in a retail environment. Participants evaluated the dishwasher from 12 feet, 3 feet, and while interacting with it. The survey included both quantitative and qualitative measures. 400 users participated at three different retail stores and each evaluated 5 different dishwashers. Responses were recorded on the surveys pictured above.
Once the research concluded, the data was analyzed in excel. In this particular case, the qualitative data proved more valuable than quantitative data. One insight gleaned from this research, was that users preferred the inside of the dishwasher to have darker gray tines and pops of color throughout. Additionally, users requested that it be clearer how to adjust the upper rack. New projects at Electrolux utilize this research methodology.

Form Development
To understand the manufacturing and assembly processes, I toured Electrolux's factory plant where the racks, tub, and other components were made. After gaining a basic understanding of the manufacturing process, I partnered with the engineering team who would create this new rack system. This partnership allowed me to infuse functionality into my designs.
The final design includes three main tiers; good, better, and best. The redesign encompasses the entire interior of the dishwasher including the door form, the dispenser, the wheels for the bottom rack, and the color options. Each detail serves a specific purpose.
