PROJECT EDISON

Project Edison aims to target a more intuitive and simplistic cooking experience to effectively assist the "targeted Electrolux consumer". This was accomplished by creating and discovering best in class taste and texture whether they're cooking for their family or hosting a dinner for guests.

The goal is to compliment a home with a trend leading design that focuses on craftsmanship while combining new technology for ease of use.

Form Development

The current appliances are dated and in need of an update with improved aesthetics and steps forward with technology.

Step 2 Model

Step 3 Development

Project Edison provides a simple interactive design that visually stands out while showcasing new technologies and focusing on craftsmanship.

Project Edison provides unlimited possibilities to what you can achieve at home. You can experiment with new cooking techniques and be confident that you'll be able to create delicious dishes that your friends and family will love.

This video is an exploded view of the redesigned Electrolux model. Additionally, it illustrates the relationship between components and how they come together in assembly to form the final product. Additionally, it highlights details that might otherwise be obscured in a flat image.

This video demonstrates how the knob would function. There’s a visual display on the front surface and it is a two-step push in and turn knob. Step 1, pushing the knob inwards activates the knob with visual feedback, while also showing a red inner circle indicating that it is on once the visual feedback turns off. Step 2, the consumer turns the knob on from 0% to 100%.

This video demonstrates the knob design coming to life as a physical prototype. We worked closely with engineering to ensure the best outcome.

Pivot: Developing the Full Suite

At this time, the project dramatically increased in scope and I was selected to lead the entire project. With this pivot, I designed the ranges, cooktops, dishwashers, and all the under-counter appliances. I partnered with other designers to ensure all appliances matched as a family suite.

Step 4 Research Models

At this stage, we created functional models to conduct user research. In these models, the cooking appliance knobs were functional so the users could experience how the embedded light would move with the knob. The doors to every model were fully operational and the UI functioned on a few models as well.

Final Direction

When research concluded, we gained many insights to inform the final design. One key learning was users desired more stainless steel on the cooking appliances. To balance this insight with the overall glass door approach, we added more stainless steel on the front. Additionally, users informed us that the knobs felt too "Stereo-like" for a cooking appliance, so we created a more traditional knob. The final adjustment was to shift the angle of the UI to be more ergonomic, especially when viewing it from a distance.
